Spotlight on Panerai's New Luminor Due Luna Collection
A few months ago, Panerai unveiled new watches for men and women as part of its Luminor collection. The different models exude elegance and shake up the habits of the famous Italian watchmaker. Named Due Luna, the watch comes in four all-new versions. Discover every detail right away to understand what makes the Due Luna an exceptional watch.
Precision Instruments from the Start
Panerai's story began in 1860 in Florence, the cradle of high jewellery in Italy. The watchmaker made a name for itself by creating watches of rare technical sophistication, which the Italian Navy was quick to snap up to ensure it had precision equipment for its various missions. Masculine, rugged and built with a thick steel case, Panerai watches were above all intended for men. In fact, the dial of a Panerai watch never fell below the 40-millimetre mark. With the Luminor Due collection, the watchmaking house explores a world previously unknown to it and offers four superb variations of this now-iconic model, stepping out of its comfort zone with flying colours.
Luminor Due Luna: 38 mm to Explore the Moon Phase
This had never happened before. Now it has. The moon is finally featured on Panerai watches, appearing at 3 o'clock, alongside the small seconds subdial. In place of the traditional date display, there is now a sublime engraved complication, whose refinement comes as no surprise, given how long the Italian house has accustomed its clientele to excellence. The night star appears in 24-carat gold against a fascinating midnight-blue celestial vault. At first glance, one might be tempted to relegate this newcomer to the women's watch category. This is indeed the case for two of the Luminor Due references, notably because of a pink leather strap and a white mother-of-pearl case. However, the other two models, one with a steel bracelet and the other with a glossy dark-blue alligator strap, are aimed more at men. One thing is certain: beyond questions of gender, the Luminor Due Luna watches created by Panerai are above all meant to be subtle and unisex.
A Reinterpretation of the Iconic Luminor Collection
With these four new references, Panerai perfectly revisits the lines and characteristics of its Luminor range, without abandoning what made it successful in the first place. The crown guard immediately stands out: a distinctive feature of the first Luminor models, which built the brand's reputation as a diver's watch. The dial is slimmer and more modest in diameter for this quartet of slightly more discreet watches, three of which have a steel case. The fourth is made of Goldtech™, the famous alloy whose secret Panerai holds and which has already been used on many models, such as the Panerai Submersible. Reference PAM01181, the Luminor Due Luna Goldtech™, features deep red tones owing to the high copper content of the alloy. It is a perfect choice for anyone looking for an understated yet luxurious watch to wear every day.
Technical Features That Are Anything but Left to Chance
True to its reputation, Panerai has equipped its new Due Luna with an automatic winding movement. While one might initially fear an overly imposing, operational feel, the Luminor Due Luna manages to break free of the codes with charm and delicacy. It is water-resistant to approximately 50 metres and has a 4.2 mm-thick crystal, while the automatic movement offers a three-day power reserve. Depending on the PAM reference chosen, the dial features iridescent white mother-of-pearl or a satin finish enhanced by luminescent hands and Arabic numerals. These technical details give Panerai watches incomparable legibility and strong luminosity in nighttime conditions. The Due Luna's functions therefore include hours, minutes and seconds, as well as moon phases. As for the calibre, this range uses the one made by the Val Fleurier manufacture, recognisable by the P.900/MP designation (MP standing for moon phase).
With these four new models continuing the Luminor collection, Panerai once again manages to renew the aesthetics and grace of its watches.
